Raising workers’ awareness and helping them create more inclusive spaces
For over 10 years, Aging Gayfully has been defending the rights of LGBTQ + seniors and offering tools and training for more inclusive senior environment.
While it is estimated that 10% of seniors are LGBT, they remain largely invisible, mainly for fear of disclosing their homosexuality or their transidentity. This can be explained by the fact that the majority of them were forced to hide in order to avoid prison, therapy, rejection by their families, their religious community, and violence from society as a whole.
These rejections and prejudices have left traces and several studies confirm that LGBT seniors constitute a particularly vulnerable population. Although less obvious than in the past, the stigma and prejudice suffered by LGBT people persists today. Many of them fear aging, for fear of finding themselves isolated in an unwelcoming environment faced with their differences.

Other ressources (in French)
To ensure the relevance and legitimacy of our training, we work hand in hand with LGBT seniors (work group) and key players in the senior environment (advisory committee).
The goal of the work group is to help the Émergence Foundation's permanent team in carrying out the program Aging Gayfully, particularly by checking the tools, by participating in the promotion of the program and by giving us the benefit of their experience.
Our advisory committee is made up of representatives of the main institutions concerned by the theme of the aging of the LGBT population. It aims to enlighten the Fondation Émergence on the realities of the field, as experienced in the respective environment of each of these members. This committee also helps us to establish a coordinated strategy to ensure living environments without homophobia and transphobia and to identify the challenges and issues of different environments in contact with seniors.
