Taking action for the emergence of a world inclusive of sexual and gender diversity.

Our actions

Educating, informing and raising public awareness

Fondation Émergence’s mission is to educate, inform and raise public awareness about the realities of people who recognise themselves in the sexual and gender diversity. This includes, but is not limited to, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex and 2-spirit people.

To this end, the Fondation’s goals, in Quebec, Canada and globally, are to:

  • Encourage the inclusion of these individuals in society;

  • Fight homophobia, transphobia, discrimination and prejudice towards these people;

  • Promote equality for them in the eyes of the law and in society, and to advocate respect for their rights;

  • Contribute to their well-being and development, as well as that of their loved ones, throughout their lives;

  • Identify emerging issues and needs in order to address them.

Fondation Émergence is proud of its many achievements: awareness campaigns, studies and surveys on the public’s view of LGBT issues, and, especially, the establishment of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, whose reputation needs no introduction.

Our actions

To carry out its mission, the Fondation’s actions include:

  • Establishing and organizing the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, initiated by Fondation Émergence;

  • Creating and developing programs that meet the different realities of the sexually- and gender-diverse communities such as  Aging Gayfully  and the Information Guide: integrating transgender people into the workplace;

  • Maintaining constructive relationships with universities and the research community;

  • Commissioning Canada-wide surveys on the condition of LGBTQ+ people and how they are perceived by the general public;

  • Creating exhibitions that raise people’s awareness of LGBTQ+ issues;

  • Developing partnerships around the world; and

  • Being the gold standard in the fight against homophobia and transphobia.

Over the years, Fondation Émergence has earned a reputation in the area of sexual orientation rights, where it provides leadership. Some examples are:

The Quebec Policy Against Homophobia

Since 2001, it has advocated for the adoption and implementation of a Quebec Policy Against Homophobia, and was a member of the Advisory Committee for the first awareness campaign against homophobia of the Government of Quebec (2012-2013)

Declaration of Montreal

The Fondation initiated the idea to include in the Declaration of Montreal, adopted in 2006, a resolution to have May 17th officially recognized by every country in the world and the United Nations as the International Day Against Homophobia.

Taking positions

While remaining independent and non-partisan, it takes positions on major news topics that concern LGBTQ+ people, such as blood and organ donations, suicide, etc.

Same-sex mariage equality

The right to civil marriage for same-sex couples has come to crown a long battle for legal equality. The fragility of the gains requires a structured vigilance and a constant information on the questions relating to the conjugality, in particular:

  • marital status (marriage, civil union and de facto union);

  • partnership agreements;

  • the separation;

  • the divorce;

  • parental rights;

  • immigration and emigration;

  • international recognition.
